{"id":142608,"date":"2024-08-12T14:57:09","date_gmt":"2024-08-12T13:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsdigest.ng\/?p=142608"},"modified":"2024-08-12T14:57:09","modified_gmt":"2024-08-12T13:57:09","slug":"dtigress-coach-rena-wakama-named-best-coach-at-paris-2024-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepublicpulse.ng\/?p=142608","title":{"rendered":"D\u2019Tigress Coach Rena Wakama Named Best Coach at Paris 2024 Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rena Wakama, head coach of Nigeria&#8217;s women&#8217;s basketball team, the D\u2019Tigress, has been honored as the Best Coach in the women\u2019s basketball event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p> This accolade marks Wakama as the first Nigerian coach to achieve this recognition and highlights a historic achievement for Nigerian basketball.<\/p>\n<p>Wakama also made history by leading the D\u2019Tigress to the quarter-finals of the tournament, making them the first African team\u2014men or women\u2014to reach that stage.<\/p>\n<p> Despite their impressive run, Nigeria was eliminated from the women\u2019s basketball event after a 74-88 loss to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) celebrated Wakama\u2019s achievement on social media, stating, \u201cBest coach of #Paris2024 Women\u2019s Basketball, Rena Wakama, Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Wakama&#8217;s success, D\u2019Tigress point guard Ezinne Kalu was named to the All-Second Team of the Olympic Women\u2019s Basketball event.<\/p>\n<p>Wakama\u2019s journey with the D\u2019Tigress began in 2023 when she was appointed as the team\u2019s head coach.<\/p>\n<p> Prior to this role, she served as the director of women\u2019s basketball operations and assistant coach, where she significantly contributed to the development of talent and the team\u2019s academic and community outreach efforts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rena Wakama, head coach of Nigeria&#8217;s women&#8217;s basketball team, the D\u2019Tigress, has been honored as the Best Coach in the women\u2019s basketball event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
