The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has warned of a nationwide strike if their abducted colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, is not released by August 26. <\/p>\n
Dr. Dele Abdullahi, President of NARD, made the announcement at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, expressing frustration over the government’s inaction regarding the abduction. <\/p>\n
Dr. Ganiyat, a registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was kidnapped on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew. <\/p>\n
While her husband was released in March, Dr. Ganiyat and her nephew remain in captivity.<\/p>\n
Abdullahi stated, \u201cFollowing the incident, we have formally alerted all relevant security agencies, requesting immediate action for her prompt rescue.\u201d<\/p>\n
The association has also informed the Nigerian Medical Association, various government ministries, and legislative bodies about the situation.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor a country that values its healthcare providers, ensuring their safety is crucial,\u201d Abdullahi emphasized.<\/p>\n
Despite multiple appeals to security agencies and government officials, the association has seen no significant progress. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve engaged with authorities but have yet to secure meaningful dialogue or action,\u201d Abdullahi said. <\/p>\n
\u201cNARD will hold a national press conference and protest in tertiary hospitals across the country, and will initiate a strike on August 26 if Dr. Popoola is not released by then.\u201d<\/p>\n
The association commended those who have supported the cause but urged the government to take definitive steps to resolve the situation.<\/p>\n
