However,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">that is far <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">from reality. \u00a0Behind-the-scene of the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">job is made up of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">grueling schedules, heavy workloads, and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">compensation that rarely match<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> OAPs <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">effort<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Bilkis<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> Ahmad is one out of many young and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">upcoming<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> OAP navigating the media landscape.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">23-year-old<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> Ahmad is a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> Mass Communication graduate,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">with a year of experience under her belt. She had always dreamt<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> of becoming an on-air personality (OAP). After numerous failed attempts to land a job, she finally got her chance. Eager and excited, she believed the job would be all about talking and engaging with the audience. However, her desperation to find work blinded her to the reality of the role. The job turned out to be more than just chit-chatting; it involved long hours of research, planning, and multitasking under tight deadlines.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Ahmad works four days a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">week,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> her daily schedule includes anchoring <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">various<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> programs, writing <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">nd<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> delivering news for the afternoon and evening segment<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">&#8220;I start my day at 8 a.m., and once I get to the office, I immediately begin creating the news bulletin, editing it, and ensuring there are no errors,&#8221; she says. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Despite the demanding nature of the job, the compensation is far from adequate. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Ahmad <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">describes the frustration of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">earning meagre salary<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> for the amount of work required.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">&#8220;Imagine being a B.Sc. graduate offered just 10,000 Naira to work from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., four days a week. It\u2019s draining,&#8221; she laments. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">In addition to stiff workload is <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">lack of empathy from management<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> For instance, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Ahmad<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> recounts an incident where she switched shifts with a colleague who didn&#8217;t show up. She was the one who got fined and queried.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">&#8220;The superiors are strict, they show no sympathy. They always want the work done, and they don\u2019t care if you\u2019re on the brink of exhaustion.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Juggling tight schedules and earning <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">mea<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">gre<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> salary <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">isn&#8217;t unique to <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Ahmad<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> alone; it&#8217;s a widespread problem in the media industry, especially for fresh graduates or those working with smaller, less popular organizations. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">&#8220;From people I have heard from, the payment is usually small with a heavy workload,&#8221; she notes. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">&#8220;Media work requires a lot of teamwork, but more people require more money; so they would rather have fewer people do more work<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> she added.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">In addition to tight schedule, Ahmad complained of lack of transparency. She described it as <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">unspoken pressures and expectations that come with the job. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">&#8220;At the point of employment, the work seems minimal compared to the salary, but once you set foot in, the workload increases continuously, with no further compensation,&#8221; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Ahmad<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> says. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Over time, this relentless pressure affects creativity, job satisfaction, and mental health. &#8220;Being overworked and underpaid lessens one&#8217;s morale. It makes you lazy; you don\u2019t want to put in the effort because, at the end of all the work, you get paid peanuts.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">To improve conditions, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Ahmad<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> suggests hiring more staff to allow for a better division of labor. &#8220;Even if they don\u2019t want to increase the salary, having more people would at least give us time for other things,&#8221; she suggests.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Despite all the challenges, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Ahmad<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> still feels passionate about her work. However, she admits that the constant pressure and feeling of being undervalued can reduce motivation. &#8220;I love it, yes, but the pressure that comes with being overworked sometimes reduces the motivation in you,&#8221; she reflects.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\">Ahmad\u2019s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> experience as an on-air personality offers a candid look into the reality of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> kicking off your career<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont17\"> in the media industry. It highlights the need for better working conditions, fair compensation, and a more empathetic approach to management.
