Security Alert as IMN Plans Protests in Abuja, U.S. Embassy Issues Advisory<\/p>\n
The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security advisory ahead of planned protests by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) in Abuja and other major cities on Friday, March 28, 2025, warning of potential disruptions and security risks.<\/p>\n
According to the advisory, the demonstrations could lead to roadblocks, traffic congestion, and possible confrontations between protesters and security forces. While the IMN has not disclosed specific protest locations, past demonstrations have occurred in areas such as Bannex Plaza, Berger Junction, Unity Fountain, the National Human Rights Commission Head Office, Eagle Square, Area 10 Shopping Plaza, the National Mosque, Al-Noor Mosque, and Fouad Lababidi Mosque.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Embassy urged American citizens and the general public to take precautionary measures, including avoiding protest areas, staying clear of large gatherings, remaining vigilant, monitoring local news, and ensuring mobile phones remain charged while carrying proper identification.<\/p>\n
The advisory also cautioned that while protests may begin peacefully, there is a risk of escalation into violent confrontations, as has been witnessed in previous IMN demonstrations.<\/p>\n
The IMN, also known as the Shi\u2019ite movement, has a long history of organizing protests, often demanding the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, or responding to other grievances. Previous demonstrations have sometimes resulted in violent clashes with security forces, leading to casualties and arrests.<\/p>\n
