Bamboo Holds Promise for Climate-Smart Housing in Nigeria – PS, Science and Tech<\/p>\n
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye has highlighted the potential of bamboo in addressing Nigeria’s housing needs while promoting environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n
The Permanent Secretary made this statement today in Abuja at a One-Day Capacity Building Workshop on the Relevance of Bamboo for Climate-Smart Housing Construction: Integrating Nigerian Building Road Research Institute (NBRRI) Technologies in Reducing Carbon Foot Print<\/p>\n
Represented by the Ministry’s Director, Environmental Science Technology (EST), Mrs Benadette Oguche, she stated that “Bamboo is a versatile plant used for a wide range of purposes including construction reduction in carbon emission, traditional medicine, paper production, food and various purposes as well as a sustainable resource in a long history of the use in building materials”<\/p>\n
According to her, by adopting bamboo as a construction material,
\nNigeria will not only promote environmental sustainability but also benefit from a building process that aligns with principles of adoptability, comfort and affordability for both low and medium income earners.<\/p>\n
While commending NBRRI for their research and development efforts in producing sustainable solutions to mitigate climate change challenges, Mrs. Esuabana expressed optimism that the workshop’s outcomes will help address pressing issues, including high initial capital costs and unstable raw material supply, ultimately making affordable housing more accessible to Nigerian citizens.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Mr. Ibok Edifon, representing the Director of Environmental Science Technology, highlighted bamboo’s potential as a renewable, fast-growing, and low-emission building material that can transform construction methods, prioritizing both environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness.<\/p>\n
She emphasized that integrating bamboo with NBRRI’s proven technologies can offer a scalable, eco-friendly solution to Nigeria’s housing needs, meeting the demands of the growing population while preserving the environment.<\/p>\n
