AfroBasket triumph:President Tinubu rewards D\u2019Tigress with $100,000, flats, national honours<\/p>\n
President Bola Tinubu has honoured Nigeria\u2019s national women\u2019s basketball team, D\u2019Tigress, with generous rewards following their remarkable victory at the 2025 FIBA Women\u2019s AfroBasket Championship in Abidjan, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire.<\/p>\n
At a special reception held in their honour on Monday evening at the new State House Banquet Hall, Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima, on behalf of the President, announced a cash reward of $100,000 for each player, a three-bedroom flat, and the conferment of the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).<\/p>\n
Members of the coaching and technical crew also received $50,000 each, a flat, and an award of the OON in recognition of their role in the team\u2019s historic success.<\/p>\n
Vice President Shettima applauded their achievement, describing it as a testament to the enduring strength, resilience, and unity of the Nigerian spirit.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have brought immense pride to Nigeria,\u201d Shettima said. \u201cYour excellence on the court has once again put our nation on the global map for sporting greatness.\u201d<\/p>\n
Led by Head Coach Rena Wakama, the Champions clinched their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, and seventh overall, after a commanding 78\u201364 win over Mali in Sunday\u2019s final at the Palais des Sportsmanship de Treichville in Abidjan.<\/p>\n
The D\u2019Tigress contingent was received at the New Banquet Hall by top government dignitaries, including First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, and Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.<\/p>\n
