WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY: WOMEN AFFAIRS MINISTER COMMENDS JOURNALISTS<\/p>\n
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has commended journalists for their role in advancing global peace, democratic governance, and sustainable development as the world marks 2026 World Press Freedom Day.<\/p>\n
Hajiya Sulaiman-Ibrahim described reporters covering the Ministry as \u201cindispensable partners\u201d in promoting the rights of women, children, families, and vulnerable groups, and in the fight against gender-based violence.<\/i>_<\/p>\n
She highlighted that\u00a0 the annual observance, established by the United Nations through UNESCO, remains a vital platform to underscore the need for a free, independent, and responsible press in driving human rights, national security, and inclusive development.<\/p>\n
On this year\u2019s theme, _\u201cShaping a Future at Peace,\u201d<\/i>_ the Minister said journalists are central to building societies rooted in truth, justice, accountability, and social cohesion. She noted that the Ministry\u2019s programmes align with this vision by strengthening family systems, advancing inclusion, and expanding social protection.<\/p>\n
Sulaiman-Ibrahim said the Ministry\u2019s work sits within President Bola Ahmed Tinubu\u2019s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes people-centred development, social investment, and protection of the most vulnerable. A statement by the Ministry\u2019s Head of Information, Ahmed Danbazau, added that a vibrant and responsible media is essential to transparency, citizen engagement, and the Agenda\u2019s development outcomes.<\/p>\n
The Minister also pointed to the declaration of 2026 as the _Year of Families and Social Development<\/i>_, describing it as a national call to action that reinforces the Ministry\u2019s mandate to deliver targeted social impact programmes, strengthen institutions, and build multi-sectoral partnerships under the Renewed Hope vision.<\/p>\n
\u201cMedia is a critical bridge between government and citizens, and a powerful voice for the voiceless,\u201d she said. \u201cIt amplifies issues of social justice, equity, and national importance.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sulaiman-Ibrahim urged journalists to uphold professionalism, integrity, and ethical reporting, and to keep shaping narratives that promote peace, unity, accountability, and national progress.<\/p>\n
