Rebuild.
Why the Memories of Sapele Reunion 2026 Matters Now More Than Ever

By: Dr. (Engr.) Emmanuel Audu-Ohwavborua, FNSE.

There are cities whose greatness is not accidental. Their growth is the product of vision, discipline, continuity, and leadership. Consider Rome—a city that has survived empires, wars, political transitions, and centuries of change, yet remains a global symbol of civilization, history, and prosperity. London transformed itself from an old imperial capital into one of the world’s leading financial and cultural centers. Cairo continues to stand as the intellectual and historical heartbeat of North Africa, while Dubai, though younger in modern development, has shown what focused leadership and strategic planning can achieve within a generation.

The lesson is simple: cities should become better with age.

The older they are, the more productive they should be. The richer their institutions. The stronger their economy. The deeper their culture. The greater their pride.

Sadly, this logic has not held true for many Nigerian towns.

And nowhere does this painful contradiction strike harder than in Sapele.

When Sapele Was a Beacon

Those of us who grew up in Sapele in the 1970s and 1980s remember a town that was alive with purpose.

Sapele was not merely a town; it was an economic force.

It was home to the famous African Timber and Plywood (ATP), then reputed to be the largest timber industry in Africa. The rubber industry thrived. Commerce flourished. Small and medium-scale businesses prospered. Our roads bustled with productive activity. Local government functioned with a sense of order. Institutions worked. Law and order prevailed. There was dignity in labor, pride in enterprise, and hope in the future.

Young people aspired to careers in industry, business, engineering, education, and public service—not merely politics. I aspired to become an engineer, and I became one. So were many others. We remember great ones like Engr. Matthew Edevbie, Prof. Hope Eghagha, Chief Mymus Okorodudu, Mr. Dudu Orumeh, Mr. John Ashima, and many other Safarians who aspired and became.

There was structure. There was ambition. There was progress.

Sapele was evolving.

The Great Decline

Today, the story is painfully different.

Most of those iconic industries have disappeared. The factories are silent. Economic productivity has weakened. Unemployment has become widespread. Hunger has deepened. Crime and insecurity have risen. Despair hangs heavily over many homes.

For too many people, politics has replaced productivity as the preferred means of livelihood.

Instead of creating value, many now seek survival through patronage.

Instead of building institutions, we have normalized dependency.

Instead of development, we are managing decline.

This is not merely a Sapele problem—it reflects the tragedy of successive bad governance across Nigeria. But for those of us who know what Sapele once was, the decline feels personal.

We know this is not how our story was meant to end.

The Call to Reconnect

This is why the Memories of Sapele Reunion 2026 is not just another social gathering.

It is a movement.

It is a call to conscience.

It is a deliberate effort to reconnect with our roots, reignite our collective vision, and rebuild the future of our beloved town.

Under the theme:

Reconnect. Reignite. Rebuild.

the reunion seeks to bring together sons and daughters of Sapele—at home and in the diaspora; professionals and entrepreneurs; elders and youth; public servants and private citizens—to reflect on where we have come from, where we are, and where we must go.

This is not nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake.

It is strategic remembrance.

Because communities that forget their history lose the power to shape their future.

More Than a Reunion

The November 2026 Reunion will feature far more than celebration.

It will serve as a platform for:

Strategic Development Conversations

How do we restore economic productivity in Sapele? How do we attract investment? How do we rebuild local enterprise and youth employment?

Youth Empowerment and Mentorship

How do we prepare the next generation for leadership, innovation, and responsible citizenship?

Investment and Business Networking

How can successful Sapele sons and daughters contribute meaningfully to local economic revival?

Civic Responsibility and Community Development

How do we strengthen local institutions and promote accountable leadership?

Cultural Heritage Preservation

How do we preserve the values, identity, and communal spirit that once defined Sapele?

This is where memory becomes mission.

The Responsibility of Those Who Remember

Those who remember the old Sapele carry a sacred responsibility.

We cannot merely complain about decline.

We must become participants in restoration.

History teaches us that no city rises by accident. People build cities. Vision builds cities. Sacrifice builds cities.

If Rome could endure centuries and remain relevant, if Dubai could reinvent itself within decades, then Sapele too can rise again.

But it will not happen by wishful thinking.

It will happen when those who care decide to act.

November 2026: A Defining Moment

The Memories of Sapele Reunion offers us that moment.

A moment to reconnect with one another.

A moment to reignite the spirit of enterprise and excellence.

A moment to rebuild—not just infrastructure, but confidence, identity, and purpose.

Sapele gave many of us our foundation.

Now history is asking us a simple question:

What are we prepared to give back?

The answer must not be silence.

It must be action.

It must be commitment.

It must be November 2026.

Because the future of Sapele cannot be left to memory alone.

It must be built.

And it must begin now.

Reconnect.
