Akwa Ibom Becomes First State to Commission RAAMP Rural Roads, Boosts Farm Access<\/p>\n

The Government of Akwa Ibom State has officially commissioned the first batch of completed rural roads executed under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), marking a significant milestone in the state\u2019s drive to enhance rural connectivity, agricultural productivity, and economic development.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on behalf of Governor Umo Eno on Thursday, May 7, 2026, Deputy Governor Sen. Akon Eyakenyi described the project as a strategic intervention aimed at opening up rural communities, facilitating the movement of agricultural produce, and stimulating economic activities across the state.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0She recalled that the road was among the first rural access projects flagged off shortly after the inauguration of the present administration, noting that the initiative reflects government\u2019s commitment to rural development and inclusive growth.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Governor commended the partnership between the state government, the World Bank, and the French Development Agency (AFD) for supporting the project\u2019s implementation, while disclosing that several similar road projects are ongoing across different local government areas under RAAMP.<\/p>\n

According to her, the state government has so far constructed over 1,300 kilometers of roads and 40 bridges spread across the three senatorial districts as well as ten federal constituencies of the state, alongside investments in healthcare, education, tourism, aviation, and agriculture.<\/p>\n

She highlighted recent efforts to drive agricultural transformation, including the establishment of an agricultural equipment leasing company and the launch of a palm oil development initiative aimed at creating wealth and boosting food security.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Governor expressed satisfaction that Anne-C\u00e9cile Souhaid, representing the World Bank Country Director, acknowledged Akwa Ibom State as the first state to commission completed RAAMP rural road projects, describing it as another indication that the state continues to set the pace in development initiatives.<\/p>\n

In her remarks, Souhaid stated that the commissioning represented more than the completion of a road project, describing it as a major step towards transforming rural livelihoods.<\/p>\n

She noted that the RAAMP intervention in Akwa Ibom integrates roads with agro-logistics centers and rural markets to improve connectivity, reduce transportation costs, facilitate movement of agricultural produce, minimize post-harvest losses, and improve access to healthcare and education services.<\/p>\n

The World Bank Representative also commended the state government for strengthening institutional frameworks through the establishment of road asset management agencies and state road funds to ensure sustainability and effective maintenance of the infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Souhaid further reaffirmed the Bank\u2019s commitment to continue supporting the state in completing additional road sections and agro-logistics infrastructure, stressing that the roads would enhance food security, economic opportunities, and the quality of life of rural dwellers.<\/p>\n

Also speaking, the National Coordinator of RAAMP, Aminu Bodinga Mohammed, congratulated the state government for distinguishing itself among the 19 states currently implementing RAAMP nationwide.<\/p>\n

He disclosed that Akwa Ibom is among the first set of states to qualify for the second phase of the project under the RAAMP Scale-Up initiative, attributing the achievement to the commitment of the state government, especially in the timely provision of counterpart funding.<\/p>\n

Mohammed noted that the project is helping to address challenges faced by rural communities, including poor access to markets, healthcare, and transportation for agricultural inputs and produce.<\/p>\n

He further revealed that the next phase would incorporate stronger social inclusion components such as support for schools, water supply, and community-based infrastructure along road corridors, while also creating employment opportunities through road maintenance initiatives.<\/p>\n

RAAMP’s National Coordinator urged benefiting communities to take ownership of the roads and ensure proper maintenance to guarantee their sustainability and longevity.<\/p>\n

A statement from RAAMP’s Development Communication Unit disclosed that the commissioning ceremony attracted government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, development partners, and other stakeholders who commended the transformative impact of the project on rural communities in the state.<\/p>\n
