TCN Commissions New 330kV Lines in Edo to Boost Power Evacuation<\/p>\n
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned two new 330kV Turn-In Turn-Out transmission lines at the Ihovbor Transmission Substation in Edo State. The Ihovbor\/Benin and Ihovbor\/Ajaokuta lines were energized on 23rd April 2026 and commissioned on 14th May 2026.<\/p>\n
The Managing Director\/CEO, Engr. Dr. Sule Abdulaziz described the 14km double-circuit lines as a major milestone for Nigeria\u2019s transmission network.<\/p>\n
He noted that the lines link the existing Benin\/Ajaokuta 330kV route to the Ihovbor substation, creating two new routes that increase operational flexibility and resilience in the Benin corridor.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe project has increased operational flexibility and strengthened the resilience of power delivery within the Benin corridor,\u201d Abdulaziz said. \u201cIt enables TCN to more efficiently evacuate power from the Azura Power Plant and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company facility, alleviate transmission bottlenecks, and enhance system reliability.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to him, the additional 600MW evacuation capacity gives distribution companies access to more bulk electricity for industries and residential customers nationwide. The lines have been in service since April 23, with customers already benefiting.<\/p>\n
The CEO explained that the Company’s mandate is to transmit power from generating companies to load centers. \u201cIt is the responsibility of distribution companies to offtake and distribute to customers. With this project, they will have more bulk power available,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Reaffirming TCN\u2019s commitment to expanding transmission infrastructure to meet current demand and prepare for future growth, Abdulaziz called on host communities to help protect installations against vandalism.<\/p>\n
Managing Director of Energo Nigeria, Predrag Mihel, disclosed that the project involved 30 towers and twin Bison conductors capable of carrying up to 1.5GW from the NIPP and Azura plants, crediting its completion to strong collaboration between TCN and Energo.<\/p>\n
Also speaking, General Manager Engineering, Engr. Mojid Akintola, stated that the project was awarded in 2017 but faced challenges with right of way and funding, which have now been resolved. He thanked the Ihovbor host community, contractor Energo, and the TCN team for making the commissioning possible.<\/p>\n
General Manager, Benin Region, Engr. Charles Iwuamadi, added that the project adds over 600MW of wheeling capacity to the region and clarified that TCN only transports bulk electricity while Distribution companies interface directly with end users.<\/p>\n
Mr. Elliot Imafido, on behalf of the Enogie of Ihovbor\/Evbueka, commended TCN on the project. He called for indigenes to be prioritized for employment and for electricity supply to the host community to be improved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
