FG Seeks Private Investment to Electrify Healthcare Facilities Nationwide<\/b><\/p>\n
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy to healthcare facilities across Nigeria through strategic partnerships with the private sector, development finance institutions, and investors.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the National Healthcare Electrification Investor Matchmaking Forum on Monday, June 15, 2026, at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, the Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, said healthcare electrification is a critical enabler of quality healthcare delivery and better health outcomes.<\/p>\n
The forum, convened under the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative (NPHI), brought together stakeholders from the health, power, finance, climate, development, and private sectors to explore investment opportunities aimed at tackling energy poverty in Nigeria\u2019s health sector.<\/p>\n
Dr. Salako said unreliable electricity continues to undermine healthcare delivery nationwide, affecting life-saving surgeries, vaccine preservation, diagnostic services, oxygen delivery systems, emergency response, and digital health solutions.<\/p>\n
\u201cElectricity is not merely a utility but a fundamental driver of healthcare delivery,\u201d he said. \u201cEnergy poverty remains a major obstacle to ongoing reforms and the Federal Government\u2019s healthcare transformation agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n
He disclosed that NPHI was established after the National Stakeholders\u2019 Dialogue on Power in the Health Sector and has been approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the national platform for driving healthcare electrification.<\/p>\n
The initiative shifts from traditional government-funded and donor-driven asset deployment to a sustainable, private-sector-led Energy-as-a-Service framework, the Minister explained.<\/p>\n
Under this model, specialized Energy Service Providers will finance, deploy, operate, and maintain energy infrastructure while healthcare institutions focus on delivering care. The arrangement is designed to improve accountability, ensure long-term sustainability, and give investors predictable revenue streams.<\/p>\n
Dr. Salako said the current implementation phase focuses on federal tertiary health institutions, but the framework is designed to support primary, secondary, and tertiary facilities across both public and private sectors nationwide.<\/p>\n
To strengthen investor confidence, he pointed to the governance structure under NPHI: an Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee, a 24-member Inter-Agency Technical Committee, Facility Energy Management Teams, and a dedicated Project Secretariat domiciled in the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.<\/p>\n
The initiative is also pursuing a blended financing strategy that combines government commitment, development finance, climate finance, concessional capital, and private investment to enable large-scale deployment of sustainable energy solutions.<\/p>\n
Ado Bako, the Ministry’s Head of Information and Public Relations, said the\u00a0 Minister commended the United Kingdom Partnership for Accelerating Climate Transition (UK PACT) and Landell Mills International for their support in developing the framework and implementation structure.<\/p>\n
He called on commercial banks, development finance institutions, infrastructure funds, impact investors, climate financiers, and energy developers to take advantage of the growing pipeline of healthcare electrification projects under NPHI.<\/p>\n
Dr Salako described healthcare electrification as an opportunity at the intersection of health security, climate resilience, economic growth, and sustainable infrastructure development, while reducing reliance on costly diesel generation.<\/p>\n
Describing the forum as \u201cthe beginning of a marketplace where ideas become projects, projects become investments, and investments become reliable electricity for healthcare facilities,\u201d he urged participants to move beyond discussions to practical partnerships that deliver solutions at scale.<\/p>\n
He reassured investors of the Federal Government\u2019s commitment to providing policy support and an enabling environment for successful investment in the sector.<\/p>\n
