FG Reaffirms Commitment to Climate-Resilient WASH under NDC 3.0<\/p>\n
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening climate-resilient Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) systems as a key pillar of Nigeria\u2019s climate adaptation and sustainable development agenda.<\/p>\n
Declaring open the 2026 Annual National Climate Change and WASH Conference in Abuja on Monday June 29, the Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, stated that resilient WASH systems are critical to achieving water security, public health, food security and economic growth.<\/p>\n
In a statement by Mrs. Funmi Imuetinyan, Director, Information and Public Relations at the Ministry, he noted that Nigeria\u2019s updated Nationally Determined Contribution, NDC 3.0, offers a strategic pathway to mainstream WASH into the country\u2019s climate adaptation priorities.<\/p>\n
The conference, themed `Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Systems at the Frontline of Climate Change: Aligning NDC 3.0 with National Adaptation Priorities`, was organised by the Ministry\u2019s Department of Hydrology in collaboration with WaterAid, UNICEF and the World Bank-supported Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene, SURWASH, Programme.<\/p>\n
According to the Minister, the climate crisis is fundamentally a water crisis hence Nigeria must build WASH infrastructure that withstands floods, droughts and rising temperatures. He listed the Ministry\u2019s focus areas as climate-resilient water infrastructure, integrated water resources management, climate-smart sanitation, early warning systems, increased climate finance and inclusive community participation.<\/p>\n
Prof. Utsev urged stakeholders to move beyond dialogue to concrete action. `We must develop practical, actionable recommendations that will accelerate the integration of WASH into Nigeria\u2019s climate adaptation framework and NDC 3.0 implementation,` he said.<\/p>\n
He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating the enabling environment to enable the Ministry achieve its mandate. He also commended WaterAid, UNICEF, SURWASH and the National Technical Working Group on Climate-Resilient WASH for their continued collaboration.<\/p>\n
In his welcome remarks, the Director Overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Ali Ibrahim Dallah, stated that climate change remains one of the greatest challenges of our time. He called for stronger coordination, sustainable financing and innovative approaches to building resilient WASH systems.<\/p>\n
Speakers from the Ministries of Environment and Budget and Economic Planning, WaterAid, UNICEF, National Council on Climate Change, and the Nigeria WASH Network, stressed the need for stronger partnerships, effective planning and greater integration of WASH into national climate policies to protect vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n
The Conference convened State Commissioners for Water Resources, senior government officials, development partners, climate experts, WASH practitioners, researchers, civil society, academia, the private sector and the media to advance practical strategies for climate-resilient water and sanitation.<\/p>\n
Highlights included technical presentations, panel and plenary sessions, and group work focused on recommendations to mainstream climate-resilient WASH into National Adaptation Planning and NDC 3.0 implementation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
