Senate Donates \u20a650M to Families of Teachers, Security Personnel Killed in Oriire Abduction<\/p>\n
The Senate on Wednesday approved a \u20a650 million donation to the families of five Nigerians who lost their lives during the rescue of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State<\/p>\n
The victims had spent 56 days in captivity before they were rescued.<\/p>\n
The approval followed an announcement by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, during plenary. Lawmakers unanimously resolved to provide \u20a610 million each to the families of the three security personnel and two teachers who were killed in the rescue operation.<\/p>\n
Senator Akpabio commended the efforts of the Chief of Army Staff, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Inspector-General of Police, the Minister of Defence and President Bola Tinubu, whom he described as the Commander-in-Chief that led the operation.<\/p>\n
He noted that though the operation resulted in the safe rescue of the victims, it came at a very high cost.<\/p>\n
The Senate President identified the fallen security personnel as Lieutenant F. A. Isaac of the Nigerian Army; Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion, Nigerian Army; and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force.<\/p>\n
He also named the slain teachers as Deacon Olaleye and Michael Oyedokun.<\/p>\n
Senator Akpabio who expressed the hope that the financial support would provide some relief to the bereaved families, directed the Senate leadership to present the cheques to them on behalf of the Upper Chamber.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
