LAGOS POWER BOOST: FG COMMISSIONS NEW APAPA SUBSTATION, IJORA TRANSFORMERS TO DELIVER 208MW ADDITIONAL CAPACITY<\/p>\n
The Federal Government of Nigeria has commissioned two landmark electricity transmission projects in Lagos State, adding 208MW of bulk power capacity to reinforce the national grid and support economic growth.<\/p>\n
The Honourable Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, performed the commissioning on Sunday, 17th August 2026, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.<\/p>\n
According to a statement by Clement Ezeorah, the Ministry’s Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations, the Minister commissioned a new 2\u00d760MVA, 132\/33kV Gas Insulated Substation, GIS, at Apapa Road, Lagos. The facility replaces the aging 1985 substation and increases bulk power availability in the corridor by approximately 96MW.<\/p>\n
The Apapa axis hosts Nigeria\u2019s busiest ports, logistics hubs, manufacturing plants, and commercial enterprises. The modern GIS substation is equipped with advanced switchgear, Substation Automation Systems, SAS, SCADA infrastructure, and modern protection and control systems to ensure reliable supply to industries and communities.<\/p>\n
The project was delivered under Japan\u2019s Official Development Assistance, ODA, programme. Execution was by Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Takaoka Engineering Company Limited, with supervision by Yachiyo Engineering Company Limited. The Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA, provided critical support. The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, provided technical leadership for seamless grid integration.<\/p>\n
The Minister also commissioned two 100MVA, 132\/33kV power transformers at the Ijora Transmission Substation. The upgrade increases the substation\u2019s capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA, equivalent to 184MW, delivering an additional 112MW of bulk transmission capacity. The intervention will improve electricity supply to Ijora, Costain, Oyingbo, Customs, and adjoining communities within the Eko Electricity Distribution Company franchise area.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the events, the Honourable Minister said reliable electricity is central to President Tinubu\u2019s vision of a one trillion-dollar economy. He stated that the administration is focused on strengthening substations, reinforcing transmission corridors, removing bottlenecks, and mobilizing capital to deliver available power to consumers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe commissioning of Apapa GIS and the upgrade of Ijora Substation are not the end of a journey, but a step towards building an electricity system that serves as a foundation for industrial competitiveness and prosperity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Federal Government expressed appreciation to the Government of Japan, JICA, the World Bank, the Lagos State Government led by Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, TCN, the Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, Shanghai Electric Group, and all engineers and professionals involved.<\/p>\n
The Minister dedicated the projects to the people of Lagos and all Nigerians, reaffirming the government\u2019s commitment to continue reinforcing transmission infrastructure nationwide under the Renewed Hope Agenda.<\/p>\n
