Umahi Decries Vandalism On Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Says Nigerians Are Destroying Their Future<\/p>\n
Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has decried the large-scale vandalism and abuse of infrastructure on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.<\/p>\n
The Minister stated this on Tuesday in Abuja while receiving the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) who presented a report of their recent nationwide inspection of federal roads in the North-West.<\/p>\n
Umahi, who said he wept after witnessing the level of destruction when he passed the road at the weekend, warned that Nigerians are destroying their own future.<\/p>\n
“President Bola Tinubu needs our prayers and commitments, he needs everybody to be on board. When we destroy this infrastructure that is being built, it is our future that is being destroyed,” he said.<\/p>\n
The Minister lamented that despite provision of diversions, motorists now climb over concrete kerbs to create illegal crossings, while vandals remove barricades, iron rods and drainage covers.<\/p>\n
“Look at the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Way, I wept when I saw the level of destruction. Vehicles climbed over the kerbs to cross to one point. People cut the irons we used to do the barricades, they destroyed the block works and removed the covers. This is not acceptable,” Umahi stressed.<\/p>\n
The Minister clarified that construction is still ongoing on the corridor.<\/p>\n
“We are still doing bridges in Sections 1 and 2. Even though we have completed Section 1, the bridges in Section 1 are part of Section 2 project,” he explained.<\/p>\n
On politics, Umahi said he would continue to encourage people of the South-East to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 rather than backing Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).<\/p>\n
“I will continue to tell Igbos not to vote for Peter Obi, but to vote for President Bola Tinubu. That is the right decision to make,” he said.<\/p>\n
Umahi added that supporting Tinubu was in the best interest of the South-East, noting that every Igbo person has the right to support the President without being criticised or attacked.<\/p>\n
He challenged political actors seeking support in the region to present their records and contributions to the development of the South-East for public scrutiny.<\/p>\n
“Let people come and say, this is what we have done for the people of South-East. Let us put this side by side,” Umahi stated.<\/p>\n
Earlier, NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, said the Association inspected major roads including Kano-Maiduguri, Kano-Katsina, Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano, Mando-Birnin Gwari, Sokoto-Badagry and Illela-Dukamaje, which connect over 10 tertiary institutions.<\/p>\n
