Nigeria at 66: SGF Akume Urges Nigerians to Cast 2027 Votes in Hope, Not Division<\/p>\n
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has urged Nigerians to approach the 2027 general elections with hope and unity, saying democracy is sustained by peace and unity.<\/p>\n
Akume made the call on Sunday at the National Church Service held as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja.<\/p>\n
The service was themed: “Anchored in Hope: The Path to Divine Stability and Shared Prosperity.”<\/p>\n
The SGF stated that as Nigeria clocks 66, the nation must reflect not only on its past but also on the future it will bequeath to coming generations, noting that the country’s journey has recorded hard-won milestones, including two and a half decades of uninterrupted democracy since 1999.<\/p>\n
“As we look toward the 2027 elections ahead, let us remember that democracy is sustained by peace and unity. Our votes must be cast not in division, but in hope. Let us choose dialogue over discord, and unity over separation, so that our electoral process truly reflects the will of a united people,” Akume said.<\/p>\n
He said the anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey, recognise the resilience of its people and renew commitment to building a more prosperous, secure and united country.<\/p>\n
The SGF thanked God for guiding Nigeria through 66 years of independence, adding that faith and hope have been the anchor of the nation’s soul.<\/p>\n
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and for approving the service as part of the anniversary celebration, as well as to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her encouragement.<\/p>\n
Akume also thanked the leadership and members of the National Assembly, members of the Federal Executive Council, the President of the Court of Appeal, Service Chiefs and heads of security agencies, traditional rulers, the diplomatic corps, as well as the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
The SGF specially thanked the Guest Preacher, Most Rev. Musa Panti Filibus, for his message, noting that building a better Nigeria is not the work of government alone but of every citizen acting in faith and service.<\/p>\n
He commended Service Chiefs and personnel of security and paramilitary agencies for preserving the nation’s territorial integrity and protecting its people.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the Federal Government’s reform agenda, Akume said, “From reforms, we have built stability. From stability, let us deepen growth and opportunity, and from growth, let us extend shared prosperity to every corner of Nigeria.”<\/p>\n
He urged Nigerians to carry the spirit of hope and unity from the service into their homes, workplaces and public life, stressing that citizens may debate many things but must never lose sight of what unites them.<\/p>\n
