Corps Member’s Death: Senate To Probe State of Health Facilities At NYSC Camps Nationwide<\/p>\n
The Senate has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Etimbuk Daniel, at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Enugu State, as well as the state of medical facilities and emergency healthcare services in orientation camps across the country.<\/p>\n
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Senator Aniekan Bassey, calling for an urgent review of medical services and healthcare infrastructure in NYSC camps nationwide to prevent avoidable deaths among corps members.<\/p>\n
The Senate resolved that the investigation would be conducted by its Committees on Police Affairs, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, Youth Development, and Health, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).<\/p>\n
The lawmakers expressed deep concern over the sudden death of Daniel, whom they described as a vibrant and patriotic young Nigerian whose commitment to national service represented the aspirations of his community and the country at large.<\/p>\n
The Senate noted with concern reports indicating that the corps member died from complications arising from a minor headache, allegedly following delays in obtaining timely and adequate medical attention at the camp clinic.<\/p>\n
The lawmakers observed that the circumstances surrounding the incident raised serious questions about the adequacy of medical services, the availability of qualified healthcare personnel and the effectiveness of emergency response mechanisms in NYSC orientation camps.<\/p>\n
The Upper Chamber further expressed concern that the incident might not be an isolated case, but could point to broader systemic challenges involving inadequate medical infrastructure, possible negligence and the absence of effective emergency medical response and referral protocols.<\/p>\n
According to a statement by EmemMaria Offiong, Head of Information, Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Senate President, the Senate stressed that corps members deserve adequate healthcare throughout their orientation and service year.<\/p>\n
It emphasised that the government and relevant authorities have a responsibility to ensure that the health, safety and welfare of young Nigerians participating in the national service programme are adequately protected.<\/p>\n
The lawmakers maintained that orientation camps must be equipped with functional medical facilities, qualified healthcare professionals, essential medicines and appropriate emergency response equipment to address health challenges that may arise during orientation exercises.<\/p>\n
The Senate also underscored the need for effective referral arrangements with nearby hospitals and other healthcare institutions to ensure that corps members requiring specialised or emergency treatment receive prompt medical attention.<\/p>\n
Consequently, the Senate mandated the relevant committees to undertake a holistic investigation into the circumstances surrounding Daniel’s death and examine the general state of healthcare facilities in NYSC orientation camps across the federation.<\/p>\n
The investigation is expected to establish the facts surrounding the incident, identify any lapses in medical service delivery and recommend appropriate measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.<\/p>\n
The collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services is intended to support the investigation and establish any relevant facts within their respective mandates.<\/p>\n
The Senate said its intervention is aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery, improving emergency medical response and ensuring that the welfare of corps members receives the attention it deserves.<\/p>\n
The Upper Chamber reiterated the importance of protecting the lives of young Nigerians who have answered the national call to serve their fatherland, stressing that their safety and well-being must remain a priority.<\/p>\n
Following deliberations on the motion, the Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of the late Etimbuk Daniel, paying tribute to the young Nigerian whose life was cut short while participating in the national service scheme.<\/p>\n
