At least four people have lost their lives and several others sustained injuries during violent clashes that erupted amidst protests in Suleja, Niger State
Protesters barricaded the Abuja-Kaduna highway, trapping motorists for hours.
As security forces moved to disperse the crowd, gunfire erupted, claiming the lives of innocent bystanders
Among the victims is Yahaya Nda Isah, fatally struck by a stray bullet while on his motorcycle near the Suleja Police Station.
His nephew described the tragic incident, saying, “He wasn’t even protesting; he was just passing by when a stray bullet hit him in the chest, and he died on the spot.”
The situation in Suleja has deteriorated rapidly, with residents reporting widespread panic and fear. Looting and arson attempts have also been reported in the Tafa Local Government Area
The Abuja Police Command also reported that the protest had been hijacked by hoodlums in the nation’s capital.
While the police have confirmed the deployment of security personnel to quell the unrest, the violence underscores the growing tensions and frustrations among the populace.
