The #EndBadGovernance protests in Kano State took an unexpected turn on Monday when protesters, mostly underage boys, were seen waving Russian flags and chanting in Hausa as they marched through the streets. This development occurred just a day after the Kano State Government eased the previously imposed 24-hour curfew.
State Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, announced on Saturday that the curfew would be relaxed to allow normal activities from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., following Governor Yusuf’s decision to impose the curfew after violent disruptions linked to the protests. The governor emphasized that the relaxation was intended to balance public safety with the need for people to conduct their daily affairs.
The curfew had been imposed after protests against bad governance and economic hardship led to significant violence and property damage. Among the affected sites was the newly built Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) Industrial Park, which was looted and set on fire by protesters. The police have arrested approximately 269 individuals in connection with the looting.
The state government has expressed condolences to the families affected by the recent violence and pledged to continue reviewing the security situation.
