The Bauchi Police Command has arrested a 62-year-old man, Tahir Ahmed, for allegedly producing counterfeit naira notes.
According to Police Public Relations Officer Ahmed Wakil, the arrest followed an incident on August 6, 2024.
A concerned citizen from Jos North LGA, Plateau State, was traveling by commercial vehicle from Sabon Garin Narabi in Toro LGA, Bauchi State, to Bauchi.
During the journey, Ahmed reportedly boarded the vehicle and performed what appeared to be ritualistic chanting to transform papers into fake one thousand naira notes, raising suspicions.
The vehicle reached Bauchi’s Yandoka Road, where a passerby alerted the police.
After questioning, Ahmed confessed to the crime, and police recovered 238,000 naira in suspected counterfeit notes.
Wakil stated that investigations are ongoing. Police Commissioner Auwal Muhammad has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police for Criminal Investigation to request a forensic analysis from the Central Bank of Nigeria to verify the authenticity of the notes.
