Twitter’s CEO Elon Musk announced the closure of the social media platform’s local operations in Brazil.
The decision was made in response to demands from Alexandre de Moraes, a Brazilian judge, which Musk claimed would have required the company to violate multiple national and international laws.
The Tesla boss , described the judge’s demands as illegal and secretive, citing concerns over censorship and the protection of private information.
He emphasized that complying with these demands would have compromised the integrity of the company, leaving them with no choice but to cease operations in the country.
Musk’s comments highlighted that the decision, although difficult, was made to protect the safety of their Brazilian staff, who had been threatened with arrest if they did not comply with the orders.
He expressed deep regret over the closure, attributing the responsibility entirely to de Moraes, whose actions Musk argued are incompatible with democratic principles.
The X platform remains available to users in Brazil, despite the closure of the local office.
“Due to demands by “Justice” @Alexandre in Brazil that would require us to break (in secret) Brazilian, Argentinian, American and international law, ???? has no choice but to close our local operations in Brazil. He is an utter disgrace to justice”, Musk tweeted.
