ASUU Issues 21-Day Strike Notice to Federal Government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has taken a bold step by serving the Federal Government a 21-day strike notice, paving the way for a nationwide industrial action.

Sources within ASUU’s National Executive Council confirmed the development, stating that the notice was issued after a meeting at the University of Ibadan, with a copy to be sent to the Federal Ministries of Labour and Education.

“It is not an ultimatum but a strike notice. We are giving them 21 days’ notice, after which we shall embark on strike.

“Our aim for putting out the notice is that it is a requirement under labour laws so we are trying to ensure that all our actions are done according to the law,” the source said.

It would be recalled that ASUU had threatened to embark on strike over the non-implementation of agreements reached with the federal government.

ASUU emphasized that the notice is a legal requirement, ensuring that all actions are taken in accordance with labour laws.

The strike notice comes after ASUU’s threats to embark on industrial action due to the non-implementation of agreements reached with the federal government, including the 2009 re-negotiated agreements, academic allowances, and revitalisation funds.

ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, highlighted the government’s failure to implement agreements, including the payment of academic allowances and revitalisation funds, and the unchecked proliferation of universities without adequate funding.

With the 21-day notice period underway, the stage is set for a potential nationwide strike, unless the federal government takes swift action to address ASUU’s demands.
