FG and NIMC Launch Data Capturing Scheme to Boost Agricultural Productivity

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has launched a groundbreaking data capturing scheme aimed at transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Permanent Secretary Temitope Fashedemi unveiled the initiative, emphasizing its significance in creating a comprehensive database of farmers to facilitate effective agricultural planning and intervention.

The partnership between the Ministry and NIMC leverages NIMC’s expertise in identity management to create a robust and reliable database, ensuring accurate data capture and management.

A Technical Working Group (TWG) has been set up to oversee the implementation of the scheme, developing effective strategies for data capture and management, and designing robust data collection tools.

The goal is to ensure proper identification and support for farmers across Nigeria, investing in data-driven agriculture to achieve food security and empower farmers.

NIMC’s Director of Card Management Services, Dr. Peter Iwegbu, assured that the collected data will be accurate, reliable, and secure, improving the lives of Nigerian farmers.

The federal government is also developing a web application to train farmers on best practices for different crops, addressing the low ratio of extension workers to farmers and ensuring easy access to guidance for farmers.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, assured that commodity prices are expected to decrease soon due to federal government programs and interventions.
