ASUU and Federal Government to Meet in Bid to Prevent New Strike

The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and representatives from the Federal Government are set to meet on Monday to address the union’s demands and prevent a potential strike.

ASUU issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government on Wednesday, urging President Bola Tinubu’s administration to resolve lingering issues that have hindered the progress of Nigerian universities.

The notice was delivered by ASUU National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, during a press conference at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

In an effort to avert the strike, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced that government officials would engage in discussions with ASUU’s leadership on Monday.

This announcement was made on Thursday during an appearance on the Beyond 100 Days program aired on TVC.

“We have already sent out a notice to ASUU’s leadership for a meeting on Monday,” Mamman stated. He added that the government had reviewed the issues raised by ASUU in their letter and hoped to address them during the meeting.

“Some of these issues are longstanding, such as the 2009 agreement, which has its roots as far back as 1981. We’ve been engaged in ongoing discussions with ASUU’s leadership to resolve the challenges facing the university system,” the Minister concluded.
