NIA DG, Abubakar, Explains Decision to Resign

Ahmad Rufai Abubakar, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), has stepped down from his position.

He officially submitted his resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House on Saturday evening.

Following his meeting with the President, Abubakar explained that his resignation was driven by personal and family considerations, emphasizing that there were no major issues prompting his departure.

He expressed his appreciation to President Tinubu for understanding his decision and highlighted the strong relationship they have built, which he expects to continue.

Despite stepping down, Abubakar reassured that he remains deeply concerned about the security of the nation and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Reflecting on his tenure, Abubakar voiced his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the NIA for seven years, a role in which he took pride in mentoring younger officers.

He stressed that the agency is well-prepared for the future, with many capable officers ready to take on leadership roles.

President Tinubu, according to Abubakar, graciously accepted his resignation, which marks the end of a unique tenure during which he served under two different Presidents.

Abubakar’s leadership at the NIA began in 2018 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, with his term extended in December 2021.
