The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has expressed relief and gratitude over the rescue of the medical students kidnapped in Benue State and the prospective corps members abducted in Zamfara in August 2023.
Obi commended the security agencies involved in the operations that successfully freed 20 medical students in Benue, who were abducted while traveling to Enugu, as well as the eight prospective corps members kidnapped along the Funtua-Gusua Road in Zamfara State.
In a post on his X handle, the former Anambra State governor emphasized the need for the government and security forces to go beyond rescues and focus on preventing such incidents from happening. He urged that those responsible for these criminal acts be brought to justice.
“The two media reports showing the rescue of the 20 medical students… and the release of 8 NYSC members… are relieving and gladdening,” Obi said. He called on security agencies to be more proactive in combatting insecurity, stating, “Insecurity must stop. Those behind insecurity in Nigeria must be stopped.”
He also noted the ongoing violence in parts of the country, including the recent killings of 13 farmers in Niger State and the kidnapping of 10 persons in Zamfara. Obi reiterated his call for a new, more secure Nigeria, stating that the government must take the lead in protecting its citizens.
