Flooding in Sokoto State has led to the destruction of at least 14,940 houses.
This was said by Muhammad Bello Idris, the state committee on flood control’s chairman, when he gave Governor Ahmed Aliyu the committee’s report on Monday.
He said that the state had so far this year seen 1,341 villages spread across 22 local government areas suffer from flooding disasters.
11,390 farmlands and a sizable number of crops were destroyed or seriously damaged, he continued.
He added that the catastrophe also caused the destruction of over 1,000 erosion sites, 250 stagnant water ponds, 60 kilometers of drainage channels, and roughly 50 earth damage sites.
Nonetheless, the committee suggested giving the victims emergency care and giving riverine communities access to motorized boats and life jackets.
Additionally, it suggested that the state government, as well as federal and international donors, start large-scale construction projects, desilt waterways, and restore important erosion sites and dams.
Governor Aliyu congratulated the committee on a job well done and gave them his word that their suggestions would be taken into consideration.
