U.S Donates 10,000 Doses of Mpox Vaccine to Nigeria

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) on Tuesday provided Nigeria with 10,000 doses of the mpox vaccine to support the nation’s efforts in combating the current outbreak of the disease.

Mpox, formerly known as “Monkeypox,” is a viral infection that can spread through close contact, including sexual activities.

The vaccine offered is designed as a two-dose primary series for those who have never been vaccinated against smallpox and a single booster for those who have previously received the smallpox vaccine.

It is aimed at individuals aged 18 and older who are considered at high risk for the disease.

Ambassador Richard Mills, during the handover ceremony at the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), emphasized that this donation would be critical in reaching the most affected and vulnerable regions.

He encouraged Nigeria to continue mobilizing resources to acquire additional vaccines.

The Nigerian government has identified five states—Bayelsa, Edo, Cross River, Lagos, and Rivers—as the most impacted by mpox. The vaccine will be allocated primarily to those at highest risk, including close contacts of infected individuals and frontline healthcare workers, with additional doses reserved for reactive use in other regions if necessary.

Regarding vaccine safety, Ambassador Mills assured that thorough clinical trials and reviews by Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control confirmed its safety.

USAID will continue to support Nigeria with technical assistance to enhance prevention, response, and overall health systems.

Prof. Ali Pate, represented by Mrs. Kachollom Daju, expressed gratitude for the U.S. donation, underscoring the federal government’s commitment to public health and collaboration with international partners.

He highlighted the importance of continued support to address public health challenges effectively.

Mpox is a rare zoonotic disease endemic to parts of Central and West Africa and is caused by a virus related to the smallpox virus.
