AFRI-CIRD Calls for Increased Govt Investment in Data Mining for Sustainable Development
The African Centre for Innovative Research and Development (AFRI-CIRD) has called on the Nigerian government to increase investment in data mining and statistical capacity building to enhance sustainable development efforts.
Emergency Digest reports that the advocacy follows concerns raised by the World Bank regarding the quality of Nigeria’s data statistics, emphasizing the need for accurate and comprehensive data to drive evidence-based policymaking.
In a statement issued on Friday, Mohammed Bello, Chief Executive Officer of AFRI-CIRD, highlighted the critical role of data in measuring progress, identifying gaps, and implementing effective interventions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The organization noted that Nigeria’s current data infrastructure faces significant challenges, including inadequate collection, analysis, and dissemination, which hinder efforts in key areas such as poverty reduction, gender equality, and climate action.
“Data serves as the backbone of informed decision-making. Without reliable data, it becomes difficult to assess development progress and design impactful policies,” said Mohammed Bello.
Furthermore , Mr. Bello outlined key investment priorities, including strengthening data collection systems, capacity building for personnel, promoting transparency, and leveraging technology such as artificial intelligence and big data analytics.
AFRI-CIRD urged the government to prioritize these measures to bridge existing data gaps and ensure Nigeria’s progress toward achieving the SDGs. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to supporting this cause through research, capacity-building initiatives, and partnerships with stakeholders.
By enhancing data quality and availability, AFRI-CIRD believes Nigeria can unlock transformative development opportunities and establish itself as a leader in sustainable growth across Africa.
