President Tinubu Meets with NSA, CDS Over Growing Security Concerns

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently holding a critical meeting with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Chris Musa, at the State House in Abuja. This meeting comes at a time when the security situation across several parts of the country has been deteriorating, with increasing violence and instability.

Following his return from a 19-day working visit to Europe on Monday evening, President Tinubu is expected to receive detailed briefings from his top security and intelligence officials. The discussions are focused on the escalating violence in certain regions, particularly in Plateau and Benue states, where suspected foreign herders have intensified attacks, leading to significant loss of life and mass displacement.

Recent reports indicate that in the last two weeks, violent attacks in these states have claimed nearly 200 lives. In particular, the Bokkos and Bassa local government areas in Plateau State have seen over 100 fatalities, with specific incidents in Zike and Kimakpa communities, which together accounted for over 100 deaths. In Benue State, local authorities have reported further casualties, including 44 deaths across various localities. The situation has become dire, with survivors fleeing their communities, often leaving their homes and livelihoods behind.

On April 19, Governor Hyacinth Alia confirmed 20 deaths following coordinated attacks in Logo and Ukum local government areas. The governor also expressed concerns that the attackers might be foreign nationals, as they do not speak any of Nigeria’s local languages, adding to the mystery surrounding their origins.

As President Tinubu’s meeting with security officials continues, there is growing anticipation that discussions will lead to more targeted measures aimed at bringing relief to the affected states. While it remains unclear whether other security leaders have joined the meeting, the conversation is expected to focus on strategies for containing the violence and providing aid to the traumatized communities.
