FG Collaborates with Traditional Institutions on Tree Planting Initiative for Enhanced Sustainability
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability through partnership with traditional institutions on tree planting and other climate change mitigation and adaptation programmes
In a statement signed by the Ministry’s Director, Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ibrahim Haruna, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, made the statement on Friday in his office in Abuja when the Emir of Nguru, HRH Mustafa Ibn Kyari, led a delegation from the Emirate on a courtesy visit to him
Balarabe emphasized that to mitigate environmental degradation and safeguard the well-being of nation and its citizens, his office, in collaboration with agencies under its purview, is working tirelessly to restore degraded lands, promote afforestation, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and combat desertification in Yobe and other affected states.
The Minister who stressed the commitment of the present administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda to an environmentally friendly economy assured the Emir that the Ministry would provide 100,000 tree seedlings to support the Emirate Council’s target of planting 50,000 trees in 2025
He listed other areas of focus to include Nguru Watershed, Hadejia-Jamare River Basin, Lake Chad Basin among others.
Earlier, the Emir of Nguru HRH, Mustafa Ibn Kyari expressed the Emirate’s commitment to environmental protection, promoting women and youth employment, as well as improving access to agricultural finance, among others.
He commended Minister Balarabe Abbas Lawal for his prompt and decisive action in addressing environmental challenges in Nguru Emirate Council, particularly through projects being implemented by the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW), AcreSal, and the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).
The Director-General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW), Abubakar Sale, also commended the Nguru Emirate Council for partnering with the Ministry of Environment and its agencies to mitigate the impacts of climate change within the Council’s jurisdiction.
The Emir was accompanied on the visit by Abba Liman, Chairman of the Forest Farmers Cooperative Society Nguru, an organization dedicated to promoting agroforestry, climate-smart agriculture practices, and livestock development.
It would be recalled that the Presidential Committee on Nguru Ecologoical Intervention has since submitted its report to the Minister.
