Four Police Officers Killed in Benue Ambush by Suspected Herdsmen
At least four officers of the 12 Police Mobile Force (PMF) have been killed following an ambush by suspected armed herdsmen in Udei village, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the officers were on special duty on June 29 when they came under heavy gunfire while responding to a distress call.
According to the sources, the officers had received a report around 2:00 p.m. indicating that a group of armed men, believed to be Fulani herdsmen, were advancing toward Udei village with a herd of cattle.
“The assailants approached the area near the local primary school, which serves as the operational base for the PMF 12 unit. As the officers mobilized to intercept them, they were ambushed and attacked with sustained gunfire,” a source stated.
The ambush resulted in the tragic death of four officers, whose service weapons were reportedly taken by the attackers. The fallen personnel have been identified as Inspector Samuel Bisalla, Inspector Emmanuel Bitrus, Inspector John Sunday, and Inspector Kenneth Gabriel.
Two other officers—Assistant Superintendent of Police Jacob Elisha and Inspector Zakari Bangajiya—sustained injuries during the attack. They were rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi, where they are currently receiving treatment. Medical staff report they are in stable condition, though suffering from exhaustion and shock.
The bodies of the deceased officers have been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
In the wake of the attack, security authorities have deployed special tactical teams and a reinforced unit equipped with an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) to Udei and the Daudu Divisional Headquarters to prevent further violence and restore order in the area.
