EFCC Grants Tambuwal Bail After Questioning Over Alleged ₦189bn Fraud
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has granted administrative bail to former Sokoto State Governor and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, following his interrogation over alleged financial misconduct involving about ₦189 billion.
A senior EFCC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Tambuwal was released after providing investigators with the required information.
“He has been granted administrative bail. We’ve obtained what we need from him, and he will be leaving our headquarters as soon as his bail conditions are met,” the source said.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, also confirmed the development on Tuesday but declined to offer further details. Tambuwal had honoured the EFCC’s invitation on Monday, arriving at the agency’s Abuja headquarters at 11:16 a.m.
Obi Reacts, Calls for Transparent Anti-Corruption War
Reacting to the development, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, said Nigeria’s anti-graft fight must be transparent and apply equally to all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle, Obi described Tambuwal’s arrest as a reminder of the “existing contradiction” in the nation’s corruption fight.
“The sincerity of leaders is what is needed to tackle corruption. We need one law that applies to everyone— not one targeting political opponents or perceived enemies of the government,” Obi said.
He urged anti-graft agencies to be guided by the rule of law and the principles of evidence, rather than political convenience or preconceptions.
“In a credible fight against corruption, the public must be convinced that the rules are even and the subjects are not arbitrarily selected,” the former Anambra State governor added.
