US Reiterates Commitment to Visa Ban on Corrupt Nigerians

The United States Mission in Nigeria has reiterated that individuals found guilty of corruption will be denied entry into the country, regardless of their wealth or social standing.

The Mission made this known on Monday through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stressing that its commitment to fighting corruption “knows no borders or limits on accountability.”

“Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving US visas,” the statement read.

The move underscores Washington’s continued stance against graft and comes against the backdrop of stricter immigration policies under President Donald Trump’s administration.

Over the years, the US has imposed a series of visa restrictions on Nigerians. In 2020, Washington placed limits on immigrant visas, although business, tourism, official, and student visas were unaffected.

In May 2023, the US also announced visa bans targeting individuals accused of undermining Nigeria’s general elections.

Earlier in January, the Trump administration launched a clampdown on illegal immigrants, with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reporting that about 3,690 Nigerians in the country were at risk of deportation.

The reaffirmation of the visa ban signals Washington’s determination to hold corrupt actors accountable while strengthening global anti-corruption initiatives.
