Marine Ministry, NPA, Begin Review of Lagos Channel Management Joint Venture

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the Nigerian Ports Authority, has begun a five-day working visit to Lagos Channel Management Limited to assess the joint venture’s performance and strengthen oversight of maritime infrastructure.

Led by the Director of Maritime Services, Mr. Oyinloye Adeola Meshack, the delegation will review LCM’s channel management operations to verify reported outputs, track performance, set baseline data for future assessments, and confirm value for money.

This exercise aims to reinforce governance and accountability within the Joint Venture framework while providing independent technical confirmation of dredging and maintenance works.

In a statement by Anastasia Ogbonna, the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, the initiative directly supports Nigeria’s blue economy objectives and the long-term sustainability of channel management strategies.

Accordingly, it is hoped that establishing a performance baseline will also enable continuous monitoring and evaluation, ensuring that Lagos navigation channels remain safe, efficient, and fit for growing maritime traffic.

Recall that since the joint venture began in 2005, Lagos Channel Management Limited has carried out critical interventions that have significantly improved the Lagos Harbour and its access channels.

The company’s mandate covers capital and maintenance dredging, quarterly bathymetric surveys to monitor channel depths, removal of wrecks and obstructions, installation and maintenance of navigational aids, capacity building and training, and visual pollution monitoring within the channel environment.
