The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola has been commended by the Barge Operators Association of Nigeria (BOAN) for his prompt intervention which led to the successful resolution of challenges facing indigenous barge operators in Nigeria’s seaports.

This commendation was delivered by the Managing Director of Nurwags Integrated Services Ltd, Mr. Nura Wagani, during an interview session with the Ministry’s media team at the just concluded 2026 Second Quarter Citizens’ and Stakeholders’ Engagement in Lagos.

Wagani stated that the Minister’s decisive directive for an investigation demonstrated the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting local investments and ensuring fair competition in the maritime logistics sector.

He also commended the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), under the leadership of Dr. Pius Akutah, for carrying out a thorough and unbiased investigation into the allegations brought forward by BOAN.

Recall that during the 2026 First Quarter Citizens’ and Stakeholders’ Engagement, Sectoral Performance Review, and Ministerial Management Retreat organized by the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in Lagos, Wagani passionately implored the Minister to intervene in the operational bottlenecks and practices that were impacting the participation of indigenous barge operators.

According to a statement by the Ministry’s Director of Information and PR, Anastasia Ogbonna, the Minister to this end, directed the Nigerian Shippers’ Council to investigate the allegations with a view to resolving them.

With the conclusion of the investigation, BOAN confirms that the issues previously raised have been adequately addressed. The Association expressed confidence that the outcome will further strengthen indigenous participation and promote efficiency in barge operations across Nigerian waterways.

BOAN also reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, NSC, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to sustain safety, compliance, and growth in the sector
