Customs Seize N3.6bn Drug-Laced Cookies, Gummies Hidden In Imported Cars At Tin Can Port

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Port Command, has intercepted two 40-foot containers laden with cannabis-infused cookies and gummies concealed inside imported used vehicles at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos.

The seizures, with a combined street value of N3.67 billion, were made through joint operations with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Oscar Ivara, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

Ivara said the first container, numbered *MSDU655132/0*, was intercepted on September 2, 2026. A 100 per cent joint physical examination by Customs and NDLEA operatives revealed *890 packs of Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies and gummies* weighing 598.08kg, hidden alongside two used vehicles – a 2008 Mercedes-Benz and a 2012 Nissan Infiniti.

The second container, numbered *SKU625643/6*, was intercepted on September 16, 2026. Examination of the container uncovered *1,207 packages of Cannabis indica* weighing 603.75kg, with an estimated street value of N3.62 billion.

The illicit drugs were concealed among two used Toyota Sienna vehicles, two used Toyota Corolla vehicles and used engine spare parts.

According to Ivara, the two interceptions amounted to *1,201.83 kilogrammes* of suspected illicit drug substances, with a combined street value of *N3.67 billion*.

He said the concealment method highlights the desperation of smugglers to exploit containerised cargo to move prohibited items through the seaports.

“The seizures are part of our collective resolve to prevent the smuggling of illicit substances through the nation’s seaports and to protect the health, safety and security of citizens,” Ivara said.

He added that in line with established procedures and inter-agency collaboration, the seized substances will be formally handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and necessary action(Punch)
