WAPP Re-elects Sule Abdulaziz as Executive Board Chairman for Another 3-Year Term
The Chairman of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) Executive Board, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, has been unanimously re-elected for another three-year tenure.
Abdulaziz was re-elected during the 68th Meeting of the Executive Board held in Lome, Togo, on October 8 and 9, 2026.
Speaking after his re-election, Abdulaziz thanked members of the Board for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to continue working with the team to advance WAPP’s mandate.
He urged member utilities to strengthen collective responsibility in building a viable regional electricity market, stressing that Board decisions must enhance WAPP’s capacity to respond to the region’s energy needs.
The Chairman said the task before the Board is to ensure implementation of the principles approved at the 67th Meeting for the progressive establishment of the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO), while preserving operational continuity through the WAPP Information and Coordination Centre (ICC).
He noted that the transition must be anchored on a sound legal, institutional and financial framework that protects the interests of WAPP and its members.
On financing, Abdulaziz stressed that statutory contributions remain critical to the Pool’s autonomy.
“Statutory contributions are not a formality; they are the basis of WAPP’s autonomy and capacity to act,” he said, urging members to honour their financial obligations.
Abdulaziz described network synchronisation and the launch of the regional electricity market as key priorities, noting that the market will only succeed if built on clear rules, reliable data, credible financial mechanisms and effective governance.
Earlier, Secretary General of WAPP and Secretary of the Executive Board, Mr. Abdoulaye Dia, said the Pool has continued to implement guidelines on institutional strengthening and operationalisation of the ISMO since the 67th session.
He highlighted that progress and increased visibility have earned WAPP new partnerships, reaffirming the Secretariat’s commitment to building an integrated, reliable and competitive regional electricity system ahead of the launch of Phase 2 of the market early next year.
Dia also called on member utilities to settle outstanding contributions, noting that regular funding and collective discipline are critical to WAPP’s credibility.
The Board further considered the restructuring study on ISMO operationalisation, adopted the Charter of the Forum for Women in Energy in West Africa and a Memorandum of Understanding with the Millennium Challenge Account Cote d’Ivoire.
It also reviewed membership applications from four utilities: Konexa (Nigeria), SOGESART (Senegal), SOGEOH and HOLDEN Niger SARL, which will be ratified at the WAPP General Assembly later in the year.
According to a statement by TCN Management, the meeting welcomed new Board representatives, including Mr. Lawrent Tossou of SBEE Benin, Mr. Amidou Traore of CI-ENERGIES and Mr. Julien Sagna of SOGEM.
