NISO, Power Sector Stakeholders Chart Course for New Electricity Market Under Electricity Act
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) on Wednesday joined stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) to chart a course for Nigeria’s emerging multi-level electricity market under the Electricity Act 2023.
The deliberations took place at the National Workshop on the Electricity Act 2023 held at the State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The two-day workshop was organised by the Office of the Vice President in collaboration with AllStates Management Partners Solutions Limited.
The NISO delegation was led by its Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, FNSE. He was accompanied by the Company Secretary and General Manager, Legal, Barr. Bashir Ahmed and the Assistant General Manager, Legal, Hajiya Maryam Gabdo Malabu.
The workshop focused on the implications of the Electricity Act 2023, particularly the shift from a centrally regulated market to a multi-level market structure that empowers states to establish and regulate their own electricity markets.
Participants examined opportunities created by the Act for states to attract investment, drive sustainable electricity markets and improve power supply nationwide.
The programme also featured panel sessions with experts and industry operators, providing a platform to review implementation progress, address emerging challenges and explore practical approaches to strengthening electricity markets across the country.
The Electricity Act 2023, signed into law to replace the Electric Power Sector Reform Act, is designed to liberalise the power sector, clarify roles of market operators like NISO, and accelerate access to reliable electricity.
The workshop is expected to produce actionable recommendations to guide federal and state governments in operationalising the reforms.
