FG Commissions Two 100MVA Transformers in Kano, Boosts Supply by 200MVA

The Federal Government has commissioned two 100MVA power transformers at Dakata and Dan-Agundi transmission substations in Kano State, boosting transmission capacity by 200MVA.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said the intervention will improve bulk power supply to industrial, commercial and residential areas in Kano metropolis.

At Dakata substation, which serves the Dakata Industrial Complex, the installation raised capacity from 150MVA to 250MVA, a 66.7 per cent increase, and is expected to benefit about 70,000 households.

At Dan-Agundi substation, which supplies the Emir’s Palace, Kano ancient town and adjoining communities, the project restored capacity after a fire incident. Two of the three 60MVA transformers were affected by fire, leaving only 60MVA. The new 100MVA transformer has now increased available capacity to 160MVA, benefiting an estimated 80,330 people.

Both projects included replacement of analogue control and protection panels with digital systems and extension of control rooms.

The projects were funded by the World Bank and executed by China Energy Engineering Group Jiangsu Power Design Institute (JSPDI). Awarded in June 2021, they were completed in June 2026 under the Nigerian Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion and Rehabilitation Programme (NEGMERP).

TCN MD/CEO Engr. Sule Abdulaziz said the projects will support Kano’s commercial and industrial activities and align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. He appealed to host communities to protect transmission facilities and respect Right-of-Way corridors.

The commissioning was performed by the Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, alongside Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf.
