No Active Ebola Case in Nigeria After Patient Evacuation — WHO

Nigeria currently has no active case of Ebola Virus Disease following the medical evacuation of the confirmed patient and her husband to Switzerland, the World Health Organisation has said.

The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Prof. Mohamed Janabi, disclosed this in a post on X on Monday.

Janabi confirmed that the patient and her spouse — both Swiss nationals — were airlifted to Switzerland earlier in the day via an air ambulance. He was reacting to an earlier announcement by Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate.

According to Janabi, the patient was clinically stable at the time of evacuation after being successfully managed through the acute phase of the illness by the Nigerian medical team.

He commended the Federal Government, health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and all partners who contributed to the response.

“This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to what Africa can accomplish when we work together. This is a proud moment demonstrating African expertise, resilience, and leadership in public health,” he said.

Janabi added that despite having no active cases, surveillance would continue. Nigeria will maintain follow-up on 52 contacts, while Swiss health authorities will take over the clinical management of the patient and monitoring of her husband, who is listed as contact number 53.
