Nigeria Needs Efficient Civil Service to Achieve $1trn Economy- FCSC Chair

The Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, FCSC, Prof. Tunji Olaopa, says Nigeria cannot achieve its target of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2030 without an efficient and accountable Civil Service.

Olaopa stated this on Monday in Asaba during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, ahead of the 45th National Council of the Civil Service Commissions of the Federation.

According to him, the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu hinges on a future-ready Civil Service driven by technology, policy intelligence and accountability to Nigerians.

He disclosed that the Commission has developed a strategic plan to rewire the organisational intelligence of the Federal Service, which all 36 states adopted last year.

“The Commission is currently conducting a baseline assessment to determine the level of implementation by states in the past one year. We will create incentives to produce pilot champions to drive the plan across the federation,” he said.

Olaopa explained that the Civil Service Commission, first conceived in Britain in 1853, was established to promote and protect merit, while also implementing the Federal Character principle.

He noted that the Service is currently facing challenges in merit implementation, talent competition with the private sector, generational transition and wage issues.

    In a starement, Ibraheem Zakariyya,
Head, Press & Public Relations at the FCSC
said the Chairman however commended the Delta State Government for implementing the new minimum wage, describing it as a morale booster and a practical example of placing staff welfare at the heart of reforms.

In his response, Deputy Governor Onyeme welcomed the delegation and assured the state government’s full support for the three-day meeting.

He commended the FCSC for choosing Delta as host and for its leadership in repositioning the Civil Service for effective service delivery.
