The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has clarified that it has not approved any tariff increases for data and voice services for network operators like MTN and Globacom.
This announcement was made on Saturday through the NCC’s X handle, countering recent reports that claimed the regulator had sanctioned a hike in tariffs across the telecom industry.
The false reports suggested that the NCC had authorized higher charges for voice calls, SMS, data, and other services, leading to increased costs for consumers.
However, the NCC firmly denied these claims, stating that no new tariff plans or hikes had been approved and advising the public to disregard such misinformation.
The commission also emphasized its directive for telecom operators to maintain transparent and fair tariff plans.
Additionally, industry associations such as the Association of Licensed Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) have been engaging with the federal government and the NCC.
Their goal is to address pricing challenges and establish a framework that ensures affordability for consumers while maintaining financial viability for operators.
These associations have highlighted the industry’s struggle with economic pressures and the need for a review of the service pricing framework, which has not been updated in over a decade.
