PSG sign Joao Neves in €70m deal from Benfica

Joao Neves, a Portuguese sensation, was acquired by Paris Saint-Germain on Monday for a reported €70 million from Benfica.

The highly sought-after 19-year-old midfield player has signed a five-year contract with the Ligue 1 champions, keeping him with the team until 2029.

Following a fantastic 2023–24 season with Benfica, Joao Neves piqued the interest of multiple elite teams, including Manchester United. Before PSG intervened to seal the deal, the Red Devils allegedly had bids for the Portugal international rejected.

The intriguing aspect of the negotiations will be added when Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches moves to Benfica as part of the transfer, initially on loan with the option to buy.

Neves expressed his excitement about joining the French powerhouses PSG upon signing a contract.

“I’m very proud to be joining Paris Saint-Germain, a very ambitious Club. I’m going to give my all to help my team-mates, to grow at this fantastic Club and to win numerous titles,” he said.

The defensive midfielder, who has already been capped nine times for Portugal, is considered one of the best young players in Europe.

In light of Kylian Mbappe’s departure, PSG is still building their roster, so his acquisition is a major coup.

Neves may make his PSG debut on August 16 against Le Havre in their Ligue 1 season opener, so fans won’t have to wait long to see him in action.

Neves’ arrival at PSG has caused some concern regarding Manuel Ugarte’s future, as the midfield player is rumored to be heading to Manchester United this summer. How Neves’ signing affects Ugarte’s standing in the team is still unknown.
