TCN Denies National Grid Collapse, Clarifies Power Supply Disruption

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has clarified that reports of a national grid collapse on Monday were inaccurate.

According to TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, the issue was confined to a line tripping event on the Benin-Egbin 330kV isolator, not a nationwide grid failure.

Mbah explained that the disruption, which began at 2:47 p.m. on August 5, 2024, was due to a significant system surge causing arcing on the Benin-Egbin 330kV line isolator at the Egbin Transmission Substation switchyard.

This led to a temporary loss of power supply from the Egbin Generating Station to several areas.

The issue was resolved, and power was restored by 6:10 p.m. the same day.

Mbah emphasized that contrary to some media reports, there was no national grid collapse.

The incident affected only specific regions, and full power supply was reinstated promptly.

On Monday, data from the Independent System Operators website indicated a peak electricity generation of 4,067.77 MW, which dropped to 823.5 MW before a complete shutdown.

However, TCN has confirmed that the situation was contained and does not reflect a nationwide system failure.
