Far-right Riot: UK Assures Nigerians In UK Of Safety

In light of recent disturbances across various UK cities, British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, has assured the Nigerian community in the UK of their safety.

During a meeting with Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chair/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in Abuja, Montgomery addressed concerns stemming from the riots, which were ignited by the death of three young girls in a knife attack.

False claims that the attacker was an immigrant and Islamist worsened the unrest, which was further fueled by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiments.

Montgomery reported that 12 towns in the UK experienced the unrest, resulting in over 400 arrests.

To address the situation, 60 special courts have been set up, involving UK police and legal experts.

He said the UK is committed to justice and its stance against discriminationm

He also revealed that the country is open to individuals from diverse backgrounds.

He also mentioned that around 430,000 Nigerian visa applications were approved this year and advised against using intermediaries.

No Nigerian have been reported harmed, and communication with the Nigerian High Commission and diaspora groups confirmed no casualties.

Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and adhere to the UK’s travel advisory.
