Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area Chairman, Fatai Ayoola, has declared that local governments have no justification for not paying the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage.
Ayoola emphasized that with the significant increase in federal allocations and financial autonomy granted by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, local governments are well-equipped to implement the new wage.
According to Ayoola, local governments recorded 100 per cent increase in federal allocations under the present administration.
“There is no reason councils should not be able to pay the minimum wage, with direct federal allocations to them”
Ajeromi-Ifelodun pays more than the minimum wage in terms of allowances added to salaries of our members of staff.
“Paying the minimum wage will not pose any issue to us and will not affect our ongoing and future projects,” he said.
He highlighted that his council already pays above the minimum wage, with additional allowances, and provides regular palliatives to staff and community members.
Ayoola commended President Tinubu for facilitating financial autonomy and urged local governments to make a positive impact on their communities, ensuring accountability and transparency.
Ayoola added that local council officials should make necessary sacrifices for the good of the people at the grassroots.
He also shared that the council’s management, including councillors, donated their three months’ salaries to rebuild the secretariat damaged during the #EndSARS protest.
Ayoola called on Nigerians to hold their local government chairmen accountable for their actions and expenditures.
