The House of Representatives has formed a new committee to probe economic sabotage within the petroleum sector.
The formation of this committee follows the dissolution of a previous ad-hoc group that investigated issues such as the importation of adulterated fuel and the unavailability of crude oil for local refineries.
The former ad-hoc committee, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, had been involved in a contentious debate over whether the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, Mele Kyari, should be dismissed.
While some lawmakers, led by Billy Osawaru, opposed Kyari’s removal, citing parliamentary norms, the decision to dissolve the committee was influenced by controversies surrounding its operations.
The new committee, announced by House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, underscores the critical nature of the investigation and the need for collaboration between the Senate and the House. Julius Ihonvbere will serve as Co-Chairman, with other members including Iduma Ighariwey, Gboyega Isiaka, Sada Soli, Fatima Talba, Tunji Raheem, and Patrick Umoh.
