An Israeli airstrike on a school building in Gaza City, sheltering displaced Palestinians, has resulted in over 70 deaths, according to Dr. Fadl Naeem, head of al-Ahli Hospital, where many of the victims were taken.
He noted that identification of some victims was challenging due to the severe disfigurement of their remains, describing the situation as “catastrophic” with doctors unable to treat those seriously injured.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the al-Taba’een school, which housed over 1,000 people, was being used as a Hamas and Islamic Jihad military facility, with approximately 20 militants allegedly operating there.
However, Hamas has denied these claims.
The strike, which occurred during dawn prayers, left the scene in a state of horror, with witnesses reporting body parts scattered and blood on the walls.
The incident is part of a broader pattern of attacks on shelters in Gaza, with the United Nations reporting that 477 out of 564 school buildings in Gaza have been directly hit or damaged since early July, including at least 13 that were deliberately targeted.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation, with UN and international figures calling for an end to the violence and urging for an immediate ceasefire.
