The Senate has once again dismissed allegations that Senators receive a monthly sum of N21 million, clarifying that these figures do not reflect their personal salaries or allowances.
This rebuttal comes amid ongoing debates regarding the actual earnings of federal legislators.
Yemi Adaramodu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, issued a statement on Thursday to address the confusion stemming from a recent interview given by Senator Kawu Sumaila to the BBC Hausa Service.
In the interview, Senator Sumaila claimed that Senators receive a cumulative monthly sum of N21 million, which led to public outcry and misconceptions about legislative earnings.
Adaramodu clarified that the “running cost” mentioned by Senator Sumaila is distinct from the fixed salaries and personal allowances of lawmakers, which are determined by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
According to Adaramodu, these running costs are allocated for the management of Senate offices and are not part of the legislators’ take-home pay.
Further, Adaramodu emphasized that the funds are intended for official purposes, such as maintaining constituency offices and supporting staff, and they must be accounted for with proper documentation.
He stressed that the public should not confuse these operational costs with personal income, highlighting that the Senate, like other government bodies, operates within a budget allocated for its functioning.
Additionally, Adaramodu expressed concern over the ongoing narrative that Senators are unduly benefiting from public funds.
He defended the Senate, noting that it comprises professionals and leaders who are committed to serving the nation rather than pursuing financial gain.
